MAKERSPACE AND INCLUSIVE IMPLEMENTATION:
Makerspace examined through equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and anti-racism (EDIDA) frameworks
Provocations
"A provocation is an invitation to thinking."
Dr. Keri Ewart, in conversation, June 14, 2023.
Watch time 6 minutes
On the first day of the synchronous week, we watched the animation, Soar. It's a story of making and the maker mindset. A young inventor has designed and built a toy plane that crashes on its maiden flight. Shortly after, they notice a tiny travel bag has dropped on a table and then a tiny person emerges from a small aircraft that has dropped from the sky, broken. The tiny person is afraid of the inventor at first, but that quickly changes. The inventor sees the problem, a broken propeller, and quickly repairs it with materials on hand. The repair does not work and the the small aircraft crashes. The tiny person sees that the inventor wants to help and empathizes with their situation. The two characters are from very different cultures, but they understand each other.

At its core, the story is about Liberatory Design, the maker mindset of positive failure, the resiliant human spirit, and hope. Since taking this course I have a much better attitude towards making and doing that doesn't go right the first time, and will take that attitude into my daily life and model it for those that I serve.

Reflection and Ah Hah Moment
This video created an affective response in me. We watched it on the first synchronous day. It speaks to love so beautifully. My reflection is about intersectionality, a term coined by Kimberlé W. Crenshaw in 1985 to describe a lens through which power and identity can be viewed. I thought about all the challenges that people who identify as 2SLGBTQSIA+ encounter, particularly due to the current political climate in the U.S.A. (as of August 3, 2023), and in countries around the world where being anything other than heterosexual is considered a crime. My ah hah moment came when I discovered the high number of countries around the world (62 ) that consider consensual same sex a criminal act, punishable by law. I did not realize the pervasiveness. Sentences can include flogging and even death. Would this video even be allowed to be played?

Link to Critical Learning Task #2- Makerspaces and Inclusivity
How to increase equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and anti-racism in makerspaces are at the heart of this course. Marijel Melo and (2020) suggests makerspaces are more male-gendered, and targets highly educated, affluent, white users. Melo suggests phenomenal socio-emotional and physical interventions may be required to increase accessibility for more diverse and marginalized communities. Kye points to culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) as a starting point.

This provocation can be meaningful in my own context because I can use intersectionality as a foundation for discussions with instructors who are unaware of how students with diverse identities might respond to certain types of course deliveries.
